A MINI GUIDE TO WILD MUSHROOM OBSERVATION

Stay curious.
Leave it growing.

Enjoy the shapes, colors, and habitats of wild fungi. This guide is for observing—not eating or identifying edible species.

Do not eat
foraged mushrooms.

A photograph, app, forum comment, or resemblance to a store-bought mushroom does not establish that a wild mushroom is safe. Cooking does not make every poisonous mushroom safe.

Look closely

Notice the cap, stem, surroundings, and whether it grows on wood or soil. Observe without disturbing the fungus or its habitat.

Keep a photo journal

Photograph where it grows and record the date, weather, and habitat. Avoid posting precise locations of sensitive habitats.

Respect the place

Follow landowner and park rules. Stay on permitted paths and leave mushrooms for wildlife and other observers.

Suspected mushroom poisoning?

In the U.S., contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 promptly. Call 911 for a severe emergency. Do not wait for a forum response.
